Tilaurakot is a site located 29km west of Lumbini and 3km northwest of Taulihawa, which is believed by many scholars to be the ancient capital of the Sakya kingdom and the place where Prince Siddhartha spent his early life. It is known for its well-preserved ancient palace architecture, including a fortification wall and moat, and has been the subject of archaeological excavations that have revealed a range of artifacts and structures dating from the 9th to 8th centuries BC to the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. Some of the most significant discoveries at Tilaurakot include the Western Gate, the Central Structural Complex, the Central Pond, the Samai Mai Temple, the Eastern Gate, the Fortification Wall, the Northern Twin Stupa, the Eastern Stupa and Monastery, and the Southern Industrial Mound.
